Hi friends!!
I’m excited to share with you a beautiful gold metallic fondant stripe video tutorial today!! I used this technique for the top of my Metallic Mermaid Cake that I made for my newest Craftsy class, “The Clean & Simple Collection: Playful Techniques“. This class was SO full of techniques (over 30 to be precise) that we simply had to eliminate a few things to meet our time line. I wanted to show this stripe but we just couldn’t fit it in. Which I actually ended up being happy about because now I get to do it for you and have it up here for free for EVERY one!
I show how to gradient your fondant from one color to another (without an airbrush) and apply these metallic scales during the class…so, I won’t be showing you that here today. If you want to see what is in the class and everything you’ll learn, click HERE to save $20 and watch the little intro video. Be sure to check out the class photos on this link too! There’s a TON!Okay!! On to this sweet little metallic stripe!!
Here is the video!! Enjoy!
The wafer paper flower seen below is from my second class, “Simply Modern Cake Design”. Click HERE for 50% off that class.
To create the flower center, take a ball of fondant and used some tiny cuticle scissors I use for cake decorating and began at the outside edge and just clipped into the fondant and worked my way around and around until I got up to the center. Super simple!!
I hope you enjoyed the tutorial! Thanks for stopping by!

Ooooo, what a fun technique! Thanks for sharing, Jessica!!
Definitely trying this!!! Is there an alternative to the steamer as I don’t gave one.
Yay!! You can use a teapot and almost get the same results. Or, put some foil over a pot of water and form it into a funnel and turn the heat on. When it boils, bring the cake over and put it in front of the steam and keep turning it to set the gold. You don’t have to steam it…it will stay on the cake, but there’s a greater chance that it might get touched/smeared. Have fun!!!
Hi Jessica,
Just wanted to let you know I have purchased all of your classes so far on Craftsy and learned so much from you! I of course haven’t finished the newest course but can’t wait to. Your a wonderful and delightful instructor and I appreciate your willingness to teach others all you have learned. I will continue to stalk your blog and watch your courses ;)! Thanks!
You are too kind!!! Thank you so much Melanie!!! Xo!
Thanks so much – Have loved all of your craftsy classes. You are a fabulous teacher and make so many seemingly impossible tasks so easy to do. Thank you!
This a cool technique. Thanks for including this extra tutorial. Just curious if the tape adhesive is food safe. I know you said the adhesive comes off with the steaming, but I wanted to know if this technique can be used for cakes that are sold. Thanks so much!
Thanks for sharing, I also have your Craftsy classes! One question on the gold dust, I see that it is non-toxic on the video but is it edible?
Yes, it’s considered edible but it’s also an ingredient that passes through your body like a neutral. So, it’s neither bad or good for you. I’m not sure that helps a lot, but that’s the best way I can explain it.
Liz Marek of Artisan Cake Company has a video of different gold dusts and paints available. She actually paints on fondant so you can see the difference in shades & explains which ones are considered ‘edible’. I know the edible/non-toxic/food safe can be confusing! Her favorite, I believe is Rolkum, I’m trying to find a distributer in the US that carries it (can’t remember if it’s from the UK or Australia). You can find Liz’s videos on YouTube or Google Sugar Geeks, it’s probably on her website too. She sells monthly tutorials but the gold dusts is a free video. Good Luck!
Hope you don’t mind that I posted this Jessica! Your (original) blog was one of the firsts that I came across when I started a couple years ago. You continue to inspire & teach me. I so appreciate your clean work, wonderful techniques, & your willingness to share with the rest of us! I’ve always admired your outlook on family & faith. I’m so happy with the success you’ve had, you truly deserve it!
Now, if you could just give me all your secrets about maintaining balance between family and cake
Oh yes! Liz and I actually live 15 min away from each other and are friends! – small world! Yes, that blog post she did was fabulous! Thanks for letting everyone know!
Hmmm, balance between family and cake. Still figuring that one out! In fact, today I am disconnecting my Facebook!! YIKES! But I’m pulling it all and only keeping my blog. I just need to eliminate. I don’t think there’s much of a balance without some sacrifice. I want to be in the word more and I want to have the time to pray much much more!! – so, that’s what this next year will be about. Washing my family with His word and seeing where He takes us! Hugs!!
What an inspiration you are Jessica! So down to earth and so talented! The way you present your classes gives even the most inexperienced decorator the confidence to feel like they can do anything:)
Thank you for sharing!
Thank you Veronika!! xo!
I really love how you link to the items you have used in your tutorials. It makes planning to have a go so much easier. I have just finished your clean and simple cake class on Craftsy and learnt so much more in your class than I have in ANY other. Thank you for sharing your tips with us! Blessings xx
Yay! So happy you’ve enjoyed the class!! I have so enjoyed putting these classes together to arm people with tons of techniques to use right away!!
I love this tutorial, like all your work. I have a bit of a silly question- the tape and if using it and there’s a residue, does it mean the fondant is not edible anymore?
No residue at all! Which is why I loved it because it doesn’t peel the fondant away or leave any stickiness behind. BUT, it isn’t “food grade” so you do need to use at your own risk and in accordance with the laws of your area!
Ok, thank you!
