Oh beautiful silver!!
Silver leaf is such a hot trend right now. It’s a beautiful, unique and simple way to glamorize any cake. It has a rustic beauty unlike the traditional silver luster finishes that have a more modern feel.
*She is the mastress of silver and gold leafing!
*Because she has sooo many beautiful cakes I had to include another one! The above link is to her Pinterest board!! :) Plus, how genius is it to use gold luster dust and gold leaf in a two-toned effect!!
Torn Silver Leaf by Hey There Cupcake
*Love this idea…especially if you are just learning! Tear it up and put it on in a beautiful rustic way.
Rachael of Intricate Icings created this beauty for The Cake Blog’s 12 Cakes of Christmas! She used modeling chocolate and silver leaf for the bottom tier! Stunning!!!
Gorgeous cakes, incredible designs!!
Not only can you use silver leaf to cover a cake, but you can also use it for decorations like polka dots, lace and flowers!! I use a simple paper punch to create this lace effect (below)…
… and some polka dots.
Now, I know what you might be thinking!! – it’s so expensive…and what if I mess it up!!??
Don’t worry! You can do it!!
I show how to apply luster finishes and silver leaf in my latest Craftsy class. Plus, I show you how to create any kind of silver leaf decorations using a special technique and craft punches. It’s simple! I show you how!!
Here’s a link for 50% off my latest class, “Simply Modern Cake Design”.
Enjoy using this beautiful finish on your next cake project and wow your friends and family!
Blessings!!!
Beautiful work

I love to go for a class but how..?

Hi!.
Were I buy silver or golden leaf?.
Thanks so much
I buy mine on Amazon. Make sure it says edible and comes with transfer backing!!
Thanks for all the information Jessica! I have most of your classes I’m just trying to price up a wedding cake though, and they want an 8 inch square covered in silver leaf. Do you know if there is a guide anywhere that tells you how much is needed for different tiers? I’m struggling a bit! Thanks so much!
Hi Jerri!
I don’t know of a guide right now…I sometimes I’ll use printer paper and tape a few together and cut it out in the same circumference as the cake I’m going to use (heightxcircumference) then cut out a square of paper the same size as the silver leaf and trace the square on the paper (overlapping each just slightly). Cover the paper with your squares and count the squares. Add a few extra for breakage and make a note so you won’t have to do it again! I hope that helps!!
Hi Jessica. You did a beautiful job with all of your cakes. I just want to know how you apply the edible silver paper because I brought some sheets but I couldn’t applied those successfully
Thanks a lot!
Thank you! Are you speaking of the silver leaf? Did you get it with the transfer backing attached to it or in loose leaf? I show how to use both and apply it on your cakes in my metallics lesson that’s part of my second Craftsy class, “Simply Modern Cake Design”. There’s TONS in that class, so if you haven’t been able to snag it yet, here’s a 50% off discount code: http://www.craftsy.com/simplymodern. I wet the cake with a tiny bit of water, apply the transfer sheet, rub the back with paint brush, then pull off the transfer backing. I also show how to apply it to edible paper and make all kinds of decorations!! So, it’d be worth seeing. Blessings!!
Is it possible to successfully apply silver leaf to crusted bc? And can it be refridgerated overnight? Thank you
I have never done it personally, but I’ve heard you can. Yes, it can be refrigerated…I’ve also heard of people don’t that but I haven’t. I use ganache as the crumb coat and keep my cakes at room temp when doing silver leaf so I don’t take a chance! – knowing me, something bad would probably happen and I’d waste $25 in silver leaf!! haha!
Thank you!
Can silver and gold leaf be applied over ganche or does it have to be applied over fondant only?
Yes, it can be applied over ganache! Thanks for asking!
Hey Jessica, I love your work and how clean your cakes always turn out.
I’m looking for a technique or tool to create a honeycomb effect similar to the one used on the bottom tier of the Intricate Icings’ cake you posted above. Do you know what was used and/or can tell me where I can find a tool or tutorial? The silver/gold leaf effect isn’t relevant in this case, it’s really the geometry of the pattern I fell in love with.
Thank you!
